Makalu & Barun Valley adventure offers of Mt. Everest (8,848m / 29, 028ft) Lhotse (8,516 m-24,940 ft), world’s 5th highest Mt. Makalu (8,463 m / 27, 766 ft) Baruntse (7,160 m), and as far towards world’s 3rd highest Kanchenjunga with many other smaller unnamed peaks. 

Makalu & Barun Valley an adventurous trek with a traverse of high passes crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at over 4, 200 meters passes. 

Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley adventure leads to less visited region by other trekkers located in the Far North East Himalaya of Khumbakarna range of mountains on the east direction from Everest and west of Kanchenjunga mountain range, 

Makalu & Barun valley adventure, starts with a sweeping scenic flight of 45 minutes to Tumlingtar village located on the shelf of Arun River fed from the glacier of Baruntse and Makalu mountains, from here an interesting drive beyond Tumlingtar to reach a scenic mid hills village at Num, situated on a ridge dotted with farm villages with great views of snow capped peaks and surrounding hills and valley.

From here heading to scenic Barun Valley and to Sherson, with rest day for acclimatization to explore higher around Makalu Base Camp with awesome views world’s highest Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu to Khumbakarna range of mountains.

Return trek follows the same route to Num with a drive to Tumlingtar for the flight back to Kathmandu on completing a grand super adventure to Makalu & Barun Valley with great service of Sherpa Nomads and its friendly guides and porters.

On reaching Kathmandu international airport, received by Sherpa Nomads staff and transfer to respective hotel in the hub of Kathmandu, and then briefing / orientation program regarding Kathmandu, Makalu & Barn Valley.

Morning after breakfast our city tour guide will take you on a half day tour at places of interest around interesting old temples, monasteries and palaces, Kathmandu is full of World Heritage Sites, afternoon free and preparation for Makalu & Barun Valley trek.

Early morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for the super scenic flight to Tumlingtar to start the adventure to Makalu base camp with awesome panorama views array of snow capped mountains from Ganesh-Langtang-Jugal Himal, Gaurishanker, Numbur and Mt. Everest with Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu after this short flight of 40 minutes reaching at Tumlingtar in the warm sub-tropical area, located on a plateau above Arun River with views of Mt. Makalu. From Tumlingtar starting the morning with a scenic interesting drive heading to the mid hills passing many farm villages and the large town of Khandbari, drive continues on the hill ridge rough dirt road leading higher to Chinchela village from here a long descend to Num village slowly turning into a town with the motor reaching this village few years back, at Num overnight in lodge or in tents with grand views of surrounding landscapes and peaks of Jalajala Himal and Makalu.

Today a first day walk which is a moderate day but with downs and ups to Sedua village, starting with a steep descend to the bridge over raging Arun River around this place quite tropical, and then with a climb towards farm fields and small villages of Runmura, here with lunch break and then with a gradual climb to reach overnight stop at Sedua village, a small place with primary school and small health post with views of Num across the ridge and of other adjoining hills of Bhojpur and Jalajala rocky peaks.

After Sedua village, morning walk is quite gentle on undulating winding trail to Tashigaon a Sherpa village, the last village for many days till we get back after Makalu base camp trek, walking through farm areas with terraces of millet, a major crops after rice and wheat’s of this area, and then for 3-4 hours of good trek reaching at Tashigaon for lunch and overnight camp with time to visit the local village around, which is quite interesting. The Sherpa of this area is quite different to Khumbu highlanders.

Leaving the last village of Tashigaon, morning walk leads to a gradual path into dense forest of rhododendron, oaks and tall pines trees passing many cattle herder’s temporary shelters of shades and stone huts after few hours of pleasant walk stopping for lunch on the grassy meadow and summer pasture ground. Afternoon with a steep climb for 2-3 hours to reach the Kohma ridge top, slowly the tall trees give away for smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes and small birch trees. This high ridge offers excellent views of Kanchenjunga mountain range and of Mt. Makalu and adjoining peaks, from here in complete wilderness for week.

From Kohma danda morning walk leads on the ridge line on a plateau like landscapes follows gradual path with few ups and down reaching at icy ponds of Thulo Pokhari (big pond) with Sano Pokhari(small pond) after crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at over 4, 200 meters passes. Probably a lunch break here in this isolated surronding, and then heading downhill reaching the tree lines of dense forest with views of Khumbakarna Himal range of mountains towards north, overnight camp on finding a level ground in the midst of tall tree lines.

Today walks leads to unique Barun valley for its rare species of vegetation and plants and for other flora-fauna, starting with a descend for an hour and crossing a small stream to reach the valley floor, the walk is on gentle up slope with views of unnamed peaks on the both side of this valley passing few Sheppard’s shelters and a small Buddhist Gompa (monastery) built out of stones and muds from the soil of this area. After a good walk of 5-6 hours reaching at Nehe Kharka for overnight camp in the middle of Barun valley.

From Barun valley walking to reach at Sehrson at the end of the North West valley near Makalu base camp our highlight and goal of this wonderful adventure, the walk is on gentle up slopes through few vegetations of bushes of dwarf rhododendron, juniper and crossing streams with great views ahead of Mt. Makalau and Barntse peaks and after a nice walk of 5 hours reaching at our destination at Sherson for two nights camp. Here a pasture land of villages from Novagaon and Tashigaon area.

Here beneath the towering Makalu and Baruntse peaks at 7,220 meters with peak 4. Today a hike in the morning leaving the camp at Sherson for few hours to reach our destination to Makalu base camp with closer view of Mt. Makalu, Barun Pokhari and the view of the rare face of Everest the Kanshung face with Lhotse nearby, an hour of steep up brings you to the large meadow where you can walk further up to have a greater view of the peaks of this area and beyond. After an enjoyable moment with picturesque scenery of mountains that encircles this spot and returning back to camp at Sherson.

Retrace the journey back on the Barun valley to Yangre Kharka enclosed with high mountain cliffs and views of cascading waterfalls after a descend reaching the overnight camp at cow herders temporary summer grazing place at Yangrekharka.

After a wonderful time at Barun valley, today walks leaving the last of this valley with a climb to reach back to dense forest and to Mumbuk for overnight camp.

On the same trail back to Kohma ridge morning walk with a climb for an hour or more through forest on reaching the hill top ridge leaving the tree lines, and passing the ponds and over Tutu la and Shipton la reaching at Kohma ridge for overnight camp.

Morning walk heading downhill and back to thick forest and tree lines reaching back to villages and farm fields, from Tashigaon taking different higher route to Nawa gaon village, through cool shade of woodlands and farm terraces and then reaching a large Sherpa village of Nawagaon for overnight stop, with time in the afternoon to visit this nice traditional farm village.

From Nawagaon morning walk leads to descent reaching at Sedua gaon after a rest here continue downhill on steep slope to Arun river here crossing the bridge a steep climb for few hours brings to Num for last overnight camp in the mid hills of Makalu area.

After a wonderful time in the high hills and mountains and in rural villages, from here with a drive on rough jeep road, but interesting going through many farm villages and with beautiful scenery of surrounding green landscapes and snow capped peaks in the distance, after few hours of drive reaching at a large town of Khadbari the major town and headquarter of Sanka Sambua district in Makalu region. From here an hour of descend brings back to Tumlingtar in the comfort of nice simple lodge.

As per the flight time to Kathmandu, a short walk to Tumlingtar airport terminal in the morning, on boarding the plane 40 minutes of sweeping flight with parallel views of mountains all the way to Kathmandu, at Kathmandu transfer to hotel after a short drive around Thamel area, with whole day free as per the time of return flight from Tumlingtar.

Sherpa Nomads reserve this day as spare in Kathmandu, on account of flight delay and cancellation in Tumlingtar due to unfavorable bad weather, if all goes well as per the itinerary one can book for another sightseeing tour or any trip for a day.

Your last day in Kathmandu as per your international flight time, our Sherpa Nomads staff will transfer you to airport for the flight homeward bound after a remarkable life time experience in the high Makalu & Barun Valley trek with excellent service of Sherpa Nomads.
